Description
This coin is being minted by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Adelaide Pound. The Adelaide Pound was the first gold coin struck in Australia using Australian gold and with a design and dies that were produced locally. Due to the shortage of coins in the mid 1800s, the local colonial government authorised the Adelaide Pound coins to be struck. The Adelaide Pound coin was eventually re-called and melted down and so the pound had a higher gold content than its face value, so very few of the coins remain to this day. The commemorative coin features the image of the observe and the reverse of the 'type I' Adelaide Pound struck on a gold plated silver centre, which is the exact diameter of the original Adelaide Pound. It is surrounded by a ring of pure silver, and has a silver content of 60.50grams, and it is the largest coin yet produced by the Mint. This coin has a limited mintage of only 10,000 and is presented in a beautiful presentation case, and a Numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
