Description
Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson CBE (1864 – 1941) is renowned as an Australian bush poet, but he was also a solicitor, journalist, war correspondent, soldier and author.
Paterson grew up in rural New South Wales, which engendered a lifelong love of the Australian bush and its characters. His most notable poems include Waltzing Matilda, The Man from Snowy River and Clancy of the Overflow
Paterson died, after a short illness, on 5 February 1941. On the night of Paterson's death, Vance Palmer, a contemporary, broadcast this tribute:
“He laid hold both of our affections and imaginations; he made himself a vital part of the country we all know and love, and it would not only have been a poorer country but one far less united in bonds of intimate feeling, if he had never lived and written.”
Celebrating his birth and lifelong achievements, The Perth Mint has released three stunning commemorative coins. These releases consist of a 5oz silver proof coin, a 1oz silver proof coin and a 1/4oz gold proof coin.
The 1oz silver proof coin’s reverse depicts a scene from the popular anthem Waltzing Matilda, featuring a swagman in colour. A photographic portrait of Banjo Paterson is fringed by Banksia flowers,
The 1oz silver proof coins are both housed in a black display case with a wooden lid and an illustrated shipper, and are accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
