Description

The Royal Australian Mint has released beautifully designed uncirculated dollar coin depicting the Antarctic and Australian Antarctic Territory.

The International Polar Year (IPY) is an international program into polar science. Australia as an original signatory to the Antarctic Treaty (1961) has a proud history of involvement and exploration of Antarctica.

The Australian Antarctic Territory is home to a number of famous Australian research bases, such as Casey, Davis and Mawson, (Australia's three permanent continental research stations) and Macquarie Island. Other research locations include Law Base (Larsemann Hills), Edgeworth David (Bunger Hills), the Prince Charles Mountains and Commonwealth Bay.

When possible, projects are also conducted at remote Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean.
