Description
Each year the Royal Australian Mint seeks to introduce a unique, eye-catching, and engaging theme as a figurehead for its gallery press and mintmark collection.
In 2014, the Mint has selected the 1814 publication of Matthew Flinders’ historic journal, A Voyage to Terra Australis, as the inspiration for its 2014 releases in this much loved series.
Through his journal, Flinders recounted his many journeys aboard the HMAS Investigator and other vessels – including the first ever successful circumnavigation of the continent of Australia; a recount of the wreckage of the Porpoise; and a diary of his six-and-a-half years as a prisoner at the hands of the French on the Isle de France (today’s Mauritius).
The Englishman often remarked that he was “induced to go to sea against the wishes of [his] friends from reading Robinson Crusoe”, so it is fitting then that his remarkable journal reads of adventures worthy of that wonderful book.
