Description

Eight hundred years ago, the Magna Carta was given the royal seal to establish it as the quintessential source for justice and
human rights. To mark the anniversary of this revolutionary document, this uncirculated coin will be popular.

On 15 June 1215 in Runnymede, Surrey, King John placed a royal seal on one of the most important documents in human history. The Magna Carta (Great Charter) was a revolutionary declaration, ensuring that any future rulers were also bound by laws.
With the Magna Carta sealed, their power could not stop citizens enjoying their rights and freedoms. The justice system that we hold dear today, with fair trials and juries, owes its existance to this historical artefact.

The Magna Carta has been reissued by Monarchs throughout history, including the 1297 Inspeximus issue sealed by King Edward I, which now takes pride of place at the Australian Parliament House.

It is a fitting home for a document to which much Australian – as well as English and American – legislation can trace its roots. It can also be regarded as a forerunner to the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
