After his back-to-back title wins in 1962 and 1963, Melbourne businessman Bob Jane had to wait eight years for his next win. The tyre magnate knew he needed something spectacular – and imported a US Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 with a mammoth all-alloy 7.0-litre V8 engine that boasted more than 450kW of power and 800Nm of torque.
The Camaro ZL-1 was the pinnacle of Chevrolet high performance and was so rare that only 69 were ever produced. Sporting an intimidating bonnet design and requiring remarkable control, the bright orange two-door coupe completely overwhelmed the 5.0-litre Mustang of pre-season favourite Allan Moffat and led Jane to take out the 1971 ATCC title.
