Description
Australia has 20 sites listed on the World Heritage Register. These sites, each unique, beautiful and vulnerable, are featured in a magnificent montage on this 2023 Five Dollar Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin, celebrating Australia’s World Heritage.
The Royal Australian Mint has released this coin to coincide with the ICOMOS 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, being hosted in Sydney in 2023.
The World Heritage Convention 1972 underpins the protection and preservation of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List through UNESCO. These sites must be outstanding and highly significant examples of national and cultural heritage.
The 20 such Australian sites on the World Heritage List, which are of extraordinary value, beauty and significance, are featured in an artistic montage on this Coloured Frosted Uncirculated Coin.
The World Heritage concept came about through a collaboration between UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), who recognised the requirement to develop strategies to protect sites of outstanding natural and cultural value to the world. Sites that are inscribed on the World Heritage List benefit from international cooperation, financial assistance and knowledge-sharing.
