Suspicion surrounding the demise of Phar Lap refuses to go away, even after 75 years. On 5 April 1932, Australia's greatest racehorse died in puzzling circumstances on a ranch in California. Devastated by the news, many Australians were convinced that their beloved chestnut gelding, the winner of 37 races from just 51 starts, had been deliberately poisoned.
The coin portrays him at the pinnacle of his extraordinary career at Flemington racecourse. The coin's reverse depicts jockey Jim Pike riding Phar Lap to victory in the 1930 Melbourne Cup.
