2012 marks the 40th anniversary of friendship between China and Australia. The friendship between China and Australia has grown considerably over the years, with formal diplomatic relations established on 21 December 1972. Since that day, interaction between the people of China and Australia has blossomed in all facets of human endeavour.
Cross-migration, commerce, travel and study opportunities have fostered interpersonal links that have led to an increased understanding of each country’s unique culture, history and geography.
Today, there are many Australian-born Chinese and Chinese-born Australian citizens who form a significant and vibrant voice in Australian society.
Both countries are actively engaged economically, culturally and politically, incorporating memberships in organisations such as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), East Asia Summit (EAS) and the G20.
To commemorate this flourishing friendship The Perth Mint is proud to release a stunning 1oz coin, struck from 99.9% pure silver in specimen quality the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.
No more than 5,000 of these coins will be issued by The Perth Mint.
The coin’s reverse portrays the animal emblem of each country, the Kangaroo and Giant Panda, headed by the Australian and Chinese flags in colour. The design also features the inscription, CHINA AND AUSTRALIA 40 YEARS, in English and Chinese
The coin is presented in a prestigious display case and shipper that includes a specially designed numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
