This beautiful coin features the great southern Australian continent in stunning Australian mother of pearl.
Known by the familiar epithet ‘Great Southern Land’, Australia is an island continent with a coastline extending for approximately 34,000 kilometres. Bordered in the west by the Indian Ocean and to the east by the Pacific Ocean, it also experiences tropical waters of the Timor, Arafura and Coral Seas to the north, and the cold waters of the Southern Ocean to the south. Providing a multiplicity of marine environments, the surrounding seas support an extraordinary diversity of wildlife.
Mother of pearl is Australia’s national gemstone. In ancient Aboriginal Dreamtime stories, it was created when a rainbow touched the earth. It is also known to Indigenous people as the ‘fire of the desert’. Today, Australia produces the overwhelming majority of the world’s precious mother of pearl, which when cut and polished can be used to create some of the world’s most alluring jewellery pieces.
